About the client
Books Alive! is a free family literature festival that brings the magic of books to Southport. Taking place during October half-term, it invites children and families to discover stories in unexpected places, from interactive trails around the town centre to storytelling, creative workshops and book-inspired activities.
About the project
How do you turn a town into a storybook? Working with local illustrator Emmy Oranges, we developed a visual identity for Books Alive! that could bring the entire festival to life. With everything from street-level promotions to school activity packs, the identity needed to work across a wide range of formats and audiences. The Jolly Postman trail added another dimension, celebrating the much-loved children's book in collaboration with Penguin/Puffin Books, whose approval was required for relevant assets. The amazing physical trail installations were created by Make CIC, with our work supporting the wider experience through its visual identity and associated materials.
Solution & results
We created a complete visual identity spanning logo design, illustration, typography, colour and animation, with the flexibility to work across a huge range of applications. Posters, programmes and social content helped spread the word, while wayfinding, maps, A-boards and large-format graphics helped visitors navigate the festival. School activity packs and colouring sheets extended the experience beyond the town centre, giving children more ways to get involved.
Alongside the wider festival identity, we developed materials for the Jolly Postman trail, ensuring the relevant assets met the publisher's requirements. From the smallest printed detail to the largest format, every element played a part in making Books Alive! feel like a story unfolding across Southport.
